Abstract

Cognitively, humans are always trying to make sense of the abstract by referring to material and less abstract matters. The human body is the most familiar domain with all its related words that early mankind was familiar with at the dawn of history and language. This perception has led the man to recognise many of the objects around him with the help of the image he has of his own body. The question of this research is, what role does the human body play in the construction of Gilaki words and what words are made in this way? This study was conducted by library research method and the studied words were extracted from Gilaki dictionaries. Linguistic intuition of one of the authors has also been helpful in this research. The result of the research shows that many words are used in Gilaki language, in which one of the human body parts is used in the secondary meaning.
